How to setup OpenVPN via HTTP Proxy

It never hurts to be extra careful. For those of you we have an extra layer of protection.

Steps to setup OpenVPN via HTTP Proxy

You have to install OpenVPN GUI by following the tutorial for the Windows version you are using: Windows 10Windows 8Windows 7, or Windows XP.

  1. Open the .ovpn configuration file and add the following line between the “proto tcp” and “remote {VPN server IP address} {OpenVPN Port}” lines as in the image below:
    http-proxy {Proxy IP Address} {Proxy Port} stdin basic
    Replace “{Proxy IP Address}” and “{Proxy Port}” with the IP address and the port of the proxy server you want to use.

  2. Connect to OpenVPN using the TCP protocol. ( it will not work with UDP )

  3. You will be first asked to enter the OpenVPN username and password.Go to your service details in the Client Area to locate them. Use your VPN login and password, NOT the credentials for the client area.

  4. Then you will be asked to enter the Proxy username and password.
    Use same VPN credentials.

  5. When you check your IP now you should see your Proxy server IP address. This means that you have connected to VPN and Proxy on top of it. Now you’re done! Enjoy a fast and cheap VPN with HideIPVPN!
